- COMPASS-AI: Community Of Multidisciplinary Professionals Advancing Safe and Successful AI Implementation in Clinical Practice
COMPASS-AI is a 48-month project co-funded by the European Union under the EU4Health programme 2021–2027 aiming to overcome critical barriers to the safe and effective deployment of AI in healthcare by developing scalable, equitable solutions, with a focus on cancer care and remote regions.
At the heart of the project is its multidisciplinary community of experts, who will leverage their collective expertise to identify challenges, enablers, and actionable strategies for AI implementation in clinical practice.
The project will build upon FUTURE-AI, an established framework for trustworthy AI in healthcare according to six guiding principles—fairness, universality, traceability, usability, robustness, and explainability.
By integrating insights from the expert community, best-practice AI deployment guidelines will be defined and validated through four real-world pilot studies conducted across European countries, in diverse healthcare settings and clinical practices.
COMPASS-AI directly aligns with key European Commission priorities, reinforcing its strategic relevance for advancing health innovation across Europe. To support adoption and prepare Europe for broad deployment, the project will launch an interactive digital platform mapping deployment experiences, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, and offering educational programs tailored to stakeholder needs to improve AI literacy. Complemented by actionable policy recommendations, COMPASS-AI will accelerate sustainable, large-scale AI adoption in European healthcare.
The project ensures visibility and credibility through the strong consortium of partners with extensive networks, recognized experts with leadership roles in hospitals, professional societies and engagements in EU AI-healthcare projects.
- COMPASS-AI: Specific Objectives
Establish a multidisciplinary community of experts on AI deployment. COMPASS-AI will set up a sustainable expert community of healthcare professionals, hospital managers, patient representatives, AI developers, IT specialists, ethicists, regulatory experts, economists and policymakers.
Analyse success factors and barriers of AI adoption in clinical practice. We will investigate the specific enablers and challenges of AI deployment in healthcare with special focus on medical imaging, cancer care, screening/triage, primary care and resource-limited settings.
Develop evidence-based good deployment practices. COMPASS-AI will create concrete, actionable guidelines tailored to the needs of specific users and clinical environments.
Validate best practices through real-world pilots. COMPASS-AI will conduct pilots to implement and validate best deployment practices. It will do so in diverse real life clinical environments, both in advanced centres and remote centres with limited resources.
Build an interactive digital platform for stakeholder engagement. COMPASS-AI will develop and run an interactive web-based platform for sharing deployment experiences, exchanging knowledge, and facilitating collaborations.
Disseminate evidence-based practices and educate to improve AI-literacy. The interactive digital platform will serve as the central hub for disseminating project outcomes and sharing the knowledge gained on best deployment practices. An educational program on AI literacy will also be organised for healthcare professionals in close collaboration with medical professional societies.
Develop actionable policy recommendations. COMPASS-AI will synthesize findings and lessons learnt from the project to create policy recommendations for accelerating safe and successful AI adoption in healthcare across EU Member States.
