The European Commission has announced a new call for proposals under the Digital Europe Programme to support two large-scale pilots deploying cloud-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for medical imaging in real-world clinical settings.
The call will open on 21 April 2026 and close on 1 October 2026, with a total EU funding budget of EUR 9 million.
Objective of the Call
The initiative aims to fund large-scale pilots in healthcare environments where AI can support the analysis of medical imaging data, including:

CT
-
X-ray
-
PET
-
Ultrasound
AI systems will assist medical professionals by flagging findings for review, improving workflow efficiency and supporting clinical decision-making.
Expected Impact
The pilots aim to:

Improve efficiency in detection and diagnostic workflows

Support prioritisation of critical cases

Reduce pressure on radiology services

Contribute to more equitable access to screening services, including in underserved regions
Participating medical centres will join the European Network of AI-Powered Advanced Screening Centres, enabling exchange of practical experience and dissemination of good practices across Europe.
The pilots will build on existing European infrastructures, including Cancer Image Europe and HealthData@EU, strengthening collaboration and accelerating the safe and responsible adoption of AI in healthcare.
