Cancer Imaging Group

By 2010, cancer had become the leading cause of death worldwide. Medical imaging influences every step of cancer care and will play a crucial role in clinical oncology in the coming years.

The EIBIR Cancer Imaging Working Group was established to meet the interdisciplinary challenges of cancer imaging. It includes experts from the fields of radiology, nuclear medicine and image processing.

The group’s launch meeting took place during the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2010 in Vienna/AT where the work programme and next steps on a European level were defined.

In 2011 the group met with the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) at the ECR 2011 to exchange detailed knowledge on the use of diagnostic imaging and image-guided therapeutic technologies. Later in the year they also met with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) with whom a collaboration was initiated to support clinical trials related to cancer imaging in Europe.

Looking ahead to the future the Cancer Imaging Group will continue to collaborate with EORTC and there is a EIBIR/EORTC Joint Symposium on clinical trials planned for ECR 2013.
