Evidence-based radiology working group seeks interested ESR members
The European Network for the Assessment of Imaging in Medicine (EuroAIM) was initiated by EIBIR due to the frequent lack of evidence for the rational use of imaging technology. EuroAIM is now setting up a European Working Group on Evidence-Based Radiology and looks for interested radiologists or radiology residents who would like to participate in the working group and support a larger diffusion of evidence-based principles in the European radiological community.

Survey invitation of novel developments in the field of new technologies for breast imaging
Please take a few moments of your time to fill in a brief questionnaire before 7 December 2009.
Contents of the survey are novel developments in the field of new technologies for breast imaging, especially those aimed at breast cancer detection, characterisation, and monitoring. Development of (molecular imaging) probes or contrast agents for breast cancer imaging.
Please click here to access the survey.
If you indicate this in the survey, your data will be processed anonymously. The results will be published in an internal report for the members of the Breast-CT consortium and distributed to the survey respondents who indicate they would like this.
Here is some interesting background information:
‘Dedicated CT of the female breast: feasibility, optimization and comparison to standard x-ray procedures (Breast-CT)' is a FP 7 project dealing with the development of a dedicated x-ray CT breast scanner using novel technology and optimization strategies.
The intention is to prove the feasibility of CT of the breast with very high spatial resolution of 100 µm or better and high soft-tissue differentiation at dose levels equal to or below those of two-view digital mammography. Further details on the project may be found on the CORDIS website and on the project website .

EIBIR launches Winter School on Interdisciplinary Biomedical Imaging
EIBIR would like to cordially invite to the 1st edition of the EIBIR Winter School, taking place from January 17 - 22, 2010 in Viladrau, Spain.
The main objective of the EIBIR Winter School is to support the interdisciplinary training of technical and clinical PhD students working in the broad area of biomedical imaging. In this first EIBIR Winter School on Interdisciplinary Biomedical Imaging, two key clinical disease areas will be addressed which altogether represent the two leading causes of death worldwide: cardiovascular and oncologic diseases. During the five days, the most important topics and advances in this arena will be covered. The course will be hosted in Viladrau, located within the Montseny Natural Park about 70km from Barcelona, Spain. A total of 45 PhD students will be selected based on their curriculum and a letter of intention submitted to the Winter School organizers to take part in this event.

Research infrastructure project Euro-BioImaging gathers stakeholders
Euro-BioImaging is one of the 10 projects on the European Roadmap for Research Infrastructures in biomedical sciences and is jointly coordinated by EIBIR and EMBL.
The goal of Euro-BioImaging is to establish a pan-European imaging infrastructure for biological and medical research.
The Euro-BioImaging infrastructure will provide access to state-of-the-art imaging technologies, training and a continuous development of imaging research technologies. It will consist of distributed centres of excellence with a strong focus on either biological or medical imaging.
To coordinate participation and to discuss the content and structure of this infrastructure project, a stakeholder meeting will take place on September 21/22 with the aim to gather representatives of the scientific community, funding and governmental organisations as well as industry with particular interest in biomedical imaging.

A warm welcome to EORTC
EIBIR is pleased to announce that the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) has become a shareholder organisation, stressing the growing importance of oncologic imaging. EIBIR has set up a working group on cancer imaging, which is led by Dr. Anwar Padhani from the UK and will intensify collaboration with EORTC to involve more imaging in the organisation's clinical studies.
In the third quarter of 2009, the publication of the 2nd Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) call is expected, which will identify cancer as one of its priorities on the research agenda.
EIBIR looks forward to a fruitful cooperation!

EuroAIM initiative gains new momentum
EIBIR is pleased to announce that Dr. Francesco Sardanelli from Milan, Italy, has taken over the lead of the EuroAIM initiative, which was established as a network to assess radiological technology.
EuroAIM can help in forming consortia to perform meta-analyses, i.e. pooled analyses, of existing prospectively collected datasets using individual patient level data from studies that are completed. Data that have been collected in studies in the past are re-analysed under different aspects and in correlation with data from other studies. This can be helpful to improve the power of studies, to improve generalisability of results, to explore differences across settings, and in forming collaborative teams for future prospective studies.

PEDDOSE.NET - a new project on diagnostic imaging agent doses
EIBIR has entered into grant agreement negotiations with the European Commission on the submitted PEDDOSE.NET project, which is coordinated by EIBIR and scientifically led by Dr. Michael Lassmann from the University of Würzburg. It is fully supported by EANM, the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, which is a coshareholder organisation of EIBIR.
The aim of the project is to provide data on dosimetry and corresponding dose related risks when administering radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic purposes in children and adults. The composition of the consortium ensures that contacts to other bodies such as the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) Committee of the Society of Nuclear Medicine or member state radiation protection agencies are provided in order to obtain upto-date information on the developments in this field.
The expected start date of the project is November 2009.
Participate in EIBIR‘s survey on pharmaceutical trials:
EIBIR cordially invites you to give your input to the survey on pharmaceutical trials and wish to be considered for potential EIBIR-coordinated projects!
The use of imaging as biomarker in preclinical and clinical studies has gained increasing interest in the pharmaceutical industry. EIBIR is currently in discussion with different pharmaceutical companies to employ the expertise of its members in
such studies and to help identify the most suitable partners for specific projects and studies.
